Thanks for contacting me during my second trip to Montesrrat in October 2009, also for the CQWW phone contest. I worked a few hundred stations on this call sign out side of the contest, and plan to get started on Logbook of the World and EQSL with this effort. I'll respond to direct QSLs fairly promptly as well.
Thanks for contacting me during my recent trip to Montserrat in the British West Indies. Our trip was in conjunction with the CQWW phone contest, and we made about 5000 contacts in the Multi-Single category as VP2MDG. My cohorts were Jim Worthington, AD4J, Peter, K3ZM, and his brother and chief organizer, George, K2DM, along George's XYL Chris. We utilized a TH6DXX for the run station and a 3 element Mosley Classic 33 for the multiplier station. and dipoles for 40, 80 and 160. Montserrat is mostly known for the Soufrière Hills Volcano, which began erupting on July 18, 1995, and continues to be active. Previous to that, its main claim to fame was George Martin’s AIR studio, where many famous record albums were recorded from the mid 1970’s until the studio’s destruction by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Beyond that, it is a very quiet Caribbean destination, with only a few hotels and guest houses. Although most photos of Montserrat tend to focus on the volcano, the shot I selected for the front of the card better represents the Montserrat that I visited. Shot from the North, it shows a green Caribbean island that is mountainous. There is hardly any flat land anywhere! To the south is the volcano, and you can see the steam vent in the photo. The top of the dome was covered by clouds the three times I tried to see it, and it is generally clear 1 day a month, according to the locals. Our QTH was at St. Peters, in the Northwest section of the island. Our hosts for the week were David and Clover Lea, the owners of Gingerbread Hill in St. Peters. They are very ham friendly, and there is a nice collection of coax and wires left behind by other hams for visitors use. The website for Gingerbread Hill is www.volcano-island.com. There is also a link to the “Price of Paradise” videos that chronicle the eruption. I own a copy of the “Price of Paradise”, and recommend it for those interested.
73 and Good DX,
