3Y0X * UPDATE

Three operators have dropped out  of the expedition,  and the current  roster
includes F2JD, HB9BXE,  K0IR, K3NA, K4SV,  K4UEE, K9SG,  LA6VM, N2WB,  N4GRN,
N6OX, NP4IW, OH2BH, OH2PM, PA5M, UA3AB, VK4GL and W0RUN. They expected to  be
underway  from  Ushuaia,  Argentina  on  11  February.  Another  vessel  (the
"Cavendish Sea"), another helicopter and a  very experienced pilot have  been
contracted, and  the  team should  be  able to  hold  to  the  most  recently
announced schedule. Depending on weather and sea conditions they expect to be
off Peter  I about  17-18 February  and to  operate until  3 March.  Bookmark

3Y_ant   - Vidar, LA2SNA  reports  he  will  be  active  as  3Y2SNA  from  the
           Norwegian Antartic  station "Troll"  (new  one for  the  Antarctica
           Award) on 11-15  February. This  scientific station  is located  at
           72.00S-02.32E on Jutulsessen ("The Giant's  Seat") in the  Gjelsvik
           Mountains, Queen Maud Land, Antarctica (AN-016). Vidar will operate
           (SSB only) in his spare time with 100 watts into a dipole and/or  a
           vertical for 17 and 20 metres. He says he is not a very experienced

8P       - Tom, W2SC will be active (CW only) as 8P9JG from Barbados  (NA-021)
           on 15-21 February. He will  participate in the  ARRL DX CW  Contest

9Y       - 9Y4DLH is  the  callsign to  be  used during  the  Lufthansa  ARC's
           operation from Tobago (SA-009) from 23 February to 2 March  [425DXN

9Y       - 9Y4W is the contest call that  Juris/YL2GM and Girts/YL2KL  [425DXN
           718] will use from Tobago during the CQ WW RTTY WPX and ARRL DX  CW

C6       - Steve, AK0M  will  be active  as  C6ASB  from  Eleuthera  (NA-001),
           Bahamas on 13-22 February. He will  operate holiday-style on  160-6
           metres, preferred  mode being  CW with  some SSB  or digital  modes
           possible, and  will  include a  casual  entry in  the  ARRL  CW  DX
           Contest. Steve's wife, Sandy (KC0RD) may also be on SSB or  digital

CE       - The CE8A team set sail  for the Rennell  Islands (SA-???) at  02.30
           UTC on 11  February. They expected  to reach  their destination  in
           approximately 11 hours  with landing and  station setup to  follow.
           Plans are to have three stations on the air on different bands  and
           modes. QSL via CE6NE. After the  CE8A expedition, Zoli, HA1AG  will
           operate as CE8/HA1AG from Riesco Island  (SA-091) and as  CE6/HA1AG

CE_ssh   - Yuri, CA8WCI/9  reports he  is currently  active from  the  Chilean
           Antarctic Base "Presidente  Eduardo Frei Montalva"  (CE-03 for  the
           Antarctica Award) on King George Island, South Shetlands  (AN-010).
           He operates  when  weather conditions  and  spare time  permit.  CA
           licensees have limited privileges and can operate only on 80, 40  e

CT3      - Rosel, DL3KWR and Hardy, DL3KWF will be active again as  CT3/DL3KWR
           and CT3/DL3KWF from Madeira (AF-014) on  10-24 March. They plan  to
           operate mostly  on  the WARC  bands,  80 metres  and  CW  in  their

D2       - Bjorn, LA9IAA  (D2AA)  expected to  be  QRV from  Angola  in  early
           February,  but  his  activity  has  been  delayed  owing  to  local
           problems. He does not expect to be active until around three months

F        - Special event  station TM7VM [425DXN  712] will be active again  on

F        - A couple  of special  calls  will be  aired  from France  on  14-27
           February for  the Antarctic  Activity  Week: Francois,  F8DVD  will
           operate on 10-80 metres SSB as TM8ANT (QSL via home call, direct or
           bureau), while the F6KDF team will be active as TM0ANT. [TNX  F8DVD

FM       - Nicolas, F5TGR  will be  active from  Martinique (NA-107)  from  19
           March to 1 April. He will operate  on 10-40 metres SSB and CW  with

FS       - John, K9EL plans to operate on 10-40 metres (80m if possible,  160m
           very unlikely)  as  FS/K9EL  from  St.  Martin  (NA-105)  on  16-26
           February. He will be active during  the ARRL DX CW Contest to  hand

GJ       - Pete, K8PT and Craig,  K3PLV will operate  as MJ/K8PT and  MJ/K3PLV
           from  Jersey (EU-013) on 9-16  March. They will be active on  160-6
           metres CW, SSB, RTTY and  some PSK-31. This  year they will  accept
           skeds: to set one up on  CW or RTTY e-mail K8PT@chartermi.net,  for

GM       - Leo, W3LEO will once again be active as MM0LEO from Portpatrick  in
           southwest Scotland from about 20 February  to 29 March. During  the
           ARRL DX SSB Contest (5-6 March) he will use GM3W, the  Wigtownshire
           ARC contest  call. He  will  also participate  in  the CQ  WPX  SSB
           Contest (26-27 March) as MM0LEO. QSL  both calls via W3LEO,  direct

GM       - Jim, MM0BQI will  operate (on 80-6  metres SSB, CW  and RTTY,  with
           verticals and  dipoles)  as  MM0BQI/P  from  Lunga  Island  in  the
           uninhabited Treshnish Islands (EU-108) on 2-5 June. QSL via MM0BQI,
           direct (Jim Martin, 3 Lismore Avenue, Edinburgh, EH8 7DW, Scotland,
           UK) or bureau. All surplus money  from direct QSLs will be  donated
           to the Hebridean Trust, who  own and work  to preserve the  islands
           and  whose   permission  to   land   and  operate   is   gratefully

HA       - HA200CVM will be aired on all  bands and modes through 31  December
           to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the death of Csokonai Vitez
           Mihaly, one of the greatest Hungarian poets. QSL via HA0NAR (Radocz

HH       - Look for Jan/K4QD and   Koh/JA7KAC to be  active (on 10-160  metres
           SSB, CW and RTTY) as HH4/K4QD (QSL via home call) and HH4/K2AC (QSL
           via JA7AGO) from Haiti (NA-096) from  21 February to 4 March.  They
           will be operating from the Northwest Haiti Christian Mission in  St

I        - IK7AFM, IK7BPV, IZ7AUH, IZ7BFR, IZ7CRW, IZ7DOK, IZ7EDQ, IZ7FLP  and
           IZ7FMQ will operate as II7ANT on  21-27 February for the  Antarctic

I        - II8ANT and IO8ANT will be the callsigns used by several members  of
           the Strange Radio Team on 21-27 February for the Antarctic Activity

I        - Special station II2AMI will be active  from Varese, Italy on  21-27
           February for the Antarctic Activity Week.  The special call  stands
           for Aeronautica Militare  Italiana and  it is  for celebrating  the
           role played by the Italian Air  Force in the frozen continent.  QSL

J6       - Dave, K3LP will operate as J6/K3LP from St. Lucia (NA-108) on 15-22
           February. He will  participate in the  ARRL CW DX  Contest as  J6R.

J7       - Lars, SM0CCM will  operate again as  J73CCM from Dominica  (NA-101)
           from 16 February to 14 March. He will be active on all bands CW and
           RTTY, with some PSK and SSB. He  also expects to operate for a  few
           days as J70SWD from  the Carib Indian  Territory. QSLs via  SM0CCM.

J8       - Dave, G3TBK  is active  as J88DR  from the  island of  St.  Vincent
           (NA-109) until 14 March. Activity will be on 160-10 metres,  mainly
           CW and RTTY with some SSB. He  will participate in the ARRL CW  and
           SSB DX Contests and also in the RSGB Commonwealth Contest. QSL  via

LX       - ON4BAG, ON4LO, ON6QX and ON6UM will  be active as LX/homecall  from
           Luxembourg on 22-25 April. They plan to operate on 10, 12, 15,  17,
           20, 30, 40, 80 and 160  metres SSB, CW and  digital modes. QSL  via

LZ       - The Balkan Contest Club, LZ1KZA (LZ5A)  will operate special  event
           call LZ127LO  on 1-31  March. Activity  will take  place on  160-10

OX & TF  - Hector, EA3EKS  will operate  as OX/EA3EKS  from Greenland  on  2-5

P4       - Andy, AE6Y will  be active  as P49Y  from Aruba  (SA-036) on  16-22

PJ       - Bil, W8EB  and his  wife Dorothy,  W8DVC  will operate  (on  160-10
           metres SSB, CW, RTTY and PSK31)  from St. Maarten (NA-105) from  14
           February through 20 March. Bil will participate in the ARRL DX  SSB
           Contest as either PJ7B or PJ7/W8EB  along with guest operator  John

PJ       - KU8E, W9RE, N4GG and N5OT will operate as PJ4/homecall from Bonaire
           (SA-006) on 15-22 February. They will participate in the ARRL DX CW

PJ       - Joeke, PA0VDV  will operate  as PJ6/PA0VDV  from Saba  (NA-146)  on
           17-23 February  and as  PJ2/PA0VDV from  Curacao (SA-006)  from  26

PY0_fdn  - Bill, W9VA will be active (mainly  on the WARC bands and 6  metres)
           as PY0ZFO from Fernando de Noronha  (SA-003) on 16-22 February.  He
           will participate  in the  ARRL DX  CW Contest  (19-20 February)  as

R1A_ant  - Mike, RW1AI will be stationed at the Russian base Mirny (UA-07  for
           the Antarctica Award, IOTA AN-016), Antarctica until March 2006. He

TT       - Luc, ON4IA expects to operate as  TT8KLJ from Chad until around  20

V5       - Janusz, SP6IXF and Przemek, SP7VC have received their licences  and
           will operate  as V5/SP6IXF  and V5/SP7VC  during their  forthcoming

VP5      - Dave/W2YC and Harry/AA2WN will operate SSB  and CW as  VP5/homecall

W        - Dennis, WA2USA plans  to be active  as WA2USA/4  from Emerald  Isle

XT       - Jan, SM5DJZ will be in Ouagadougou,  Burkina Faso from 26  February
           until 11  March. Thanks  to  Hugo/XT2HB, he  hopes  to be  able  to
           operate as XT2JZ mainly CW on  40-10 metres (possibly on 80  metres
           as well). He hopes to be active during the ARRL SSB Contest.

YB       - The Kangean Islands (OC-217)  were activated for  the first and  so
           far only time by YB3SPS/p back  in 1996. A  new operation is  being
           planned to  take  place  in  late March,  CQ  WW  WPX  SSB  Contest
           included.Plans are to operate as YE3K (requested call) for 4-5 days
           with two stations at least; the main mode will be SSB, but some CW,
           RTTY and  PSK activity  might  take  place  before  and  after  the
           contest. Team members include YB3HBK, YB9BU, YC0IEM, YC3BDJ, YC3BX,
           YC3CC, YC3DE, YC3DIK, YC3IZK, YC3MM, YC9WZJ, YD3OZ and  IV3NCC. QSL

ZA       - A group of operators from The Mediterraneo DX Clubd and the Salento
           DX Team will  be active on  all bands and  modes from Albania  with
           prefix ZA2  on  3-10 May.  They  plan to  participate  in  the  ARI
           International Contest  and,  if  they  get  the  authorization,  to

ZF       - Jim, N6TJ will be active as ZF2TJ from the Cayman Islands  (NA-016)

AA SOFTWARE ---> Gabriele Antonelli (I5-1990) is the author of the Antarctica
Award    software,     which     is    downloadable     for     free     from
http://www.mdxc.org/antarctica/download.asp.     The  professionally  made  AA
software is  a log program  for contacts  made  with  Antarctic stations:  it
interacts with the AA Directory (it gives also the  DXCC Entiry and the  IOTA
Reference Number for each base) and makes the participation in the Antarctica

BEACON (VK6) ---> The VK6RWA 28 MHz beacon on 28264 kHz has been upgraded and
it is now running 5 Watts output. Antenna is 5/8 wave vertical. The beacon is
currently running  at the  Perth QTH  of VK6APK,  until the  new premises  of
VK6ANC are completed. Any reception reports are welcome and should be sent to

BEACON (LU) --->  The LU4XS beacon  on 28190  kHz has  been upgraded.  Signal

DXCC NEWS ---> The TX9 operation from the Chesterfield Islands (October 2004)
has been approved for DXCC credit.

EUROPEAN CASTLES DAY ---> The third edition of the European Castles Day  will
take place on 16 May between 6 and  16 UTC. Several stations are expected  to
operate from  fortresses and  castles in  France, Belgium,  Italy, Spain  and
Portugal. Information  about  castles  awards  programmes  can  be  found  on

QSL MANAGER SURVEY ---> Conducted by the "Golist, QSL Manager List", the "Top
5 QSL Managers" survey for 2004  closed for nominations  on 1 February.  Over
2100 DXers  from  around the  world  sent in  nominations  for  their  Top  5
managers,  resulting   in  100   different  mangers   being  nominated   (see
http://golist.net/ for the full list of nominees). From this list of 100, the
following Top 5 (listed in alphabetical  order) were selected based upon  the
greatest number  of nominations  received:  Phil Whitechurch  (G3SWH),  Roger
Western (G3SXW),  Nigel Cawthorne  (G3TXF), Antonio  Cannataro (IZ8CCW),  Joe
Arcure (W3HNK). This year, the Top  5 QSL Managers  will receive an  engraved
plaque acknowledging this accomplishment: "these plaques have been donated to
the Top 5 project by a Golist subscriber who believes that this award is also
needed to help show the gratitude to those  people who give so much time  and
effort to make our dreams of awards come true", John, K1XN says.

QSL VIA  N9NU  ---> Tim  Dickerson,  N9NU (http://www.n9nu.net)   is  the  QSL

able to contact any of these stations in  the past 3 months to obtain  logs",
he says, "The  few e-mail addresses  I have are  no longer valid  and I  have

SHORTWAVE DX HANDBOOK ---> The highly successful "Kurzwellen DX-Handbuch"  by
Enrico Stumpf-Siering, DL2VFR, originally published in  German in June  2003,
is now  available in  English (translation  by  Martyn Phillips,  G3RFX,  418
pages, ISBN 3-88692-045-3). Many new photographs and illustrations have  been
specially included in this English language edition. The book is published by

VU4NRO & VU4RBI REPORT ---> An interesting report, written by VU2MYH, on  the
December 2004 DXpedition/relief  efforts in the  Andaman and Nicobar  Islands
